About Jason
As Head of the James & Wells Life Sciences team, and with 30 years’ experience across multiple technology platforms, Jason has a deep understanding of his clients’ technologies and how they can be effectively captured, protected and strategically leveraged to realise the full commercial value of their businesses.
Jason is also an inventor, having co-developed two inventions relating to nutritionally balanced food and beverage products. These innovations resulted in four granted patents across New Zealand and Australia.
Jason has significant experience in complex patent disputes. Notably, in Arrow Pharmaceuticals (NZ) Limited v Sanofi-Aventis, he successfully secured a Declaration of Non-Infringement from the High Court of New Zealand.
Outside of work, Jason is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys spending time with his family, jet-skiing, fishing, golfing and hiking.
Experience
Jason has worked across a broad range of technologies, particularly in chemical and life sciences, software, AI and mechanical engineering.
Jason served as a director of several successful start-ups, including Freeload, which developed and commercialised an innovative bike rack system. Jason was also a director of Kiwijoe New Zealand Limited, the IP holding company behind the Freeload technology. The IP portfolio was subsequently acquired by Thule Group in 2011.
Jason has been recognised as a leading practitioner in intellectual property, including recognition in the 2018 Asia IP Experts guide for pharma and biotech, and being ranked among the world’s top 300 patent strategists by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM).
Jason also served for five years on the Examination Board of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys, overseeing Foreign Law, Drafting Patent Specifications, and Interpretation and Criticism.
