About Ben
Passionate about the protection of engineering innovation, Ben Dziekan is a Senior Associate in the Patents team with a diverse industry background. Based in Melbourne, Ben combines hands-on technical expertise with a rigorous understanding of Australian and international intellectual property (IP) law to deliver strategic, commercially grounded advice to his clients.
Prior to entering the IP profession, Ben gained several years of industry experience across mechanical engineering and marketing roles. He has a particular interest in sports technology, having played a key role in the development of the pink ball for Day/Night Test Cricket, and contributing to the adoption of reduced-water surfaces for elite field hockey worldwide. Ben also brings a strong understanding of the commercial and technical needs across a wide range of industry sectors.
Ben works in patents and designs across a broad spectrum of mechanical and related engineering technologies, advising clients ranging from start-ups through to established industry leaders.
Experience
Ben holds academic qualifications from the University of Melbourne, where he undertook postgraduate studies in intellectual property law to complement his prior technical training in engineering and marketing. This foundation equips him to engage deeply with complex inventions, translating intricate technical concepts into robust patent portfolios.
In his previous roles at leading Australian IP firms, Ben built a strong track record in preparing and prosecuting patent and design applications across Australian and international jurisdictions, as well as achieving favourable outcomes in contentious matters. His engineering background gives him a practical lens through which he evaluates the commercial relevance and competitive positioning of his clients’ IP assets.
Ben also teaches Interpretation and Validity of Patents at the University of Melbourne.
