About Jennifer
Jennifer Lucas is a Partner in our Auckland office, with over 15 years’ experience in patent drafting and prosecution across multiple jurisdictions. She has experience working with a wide range of industry sectors, including human and veterinary medical devices across numerous health-tech sectors, chemistry and chemical technologies, food technology, health and nutraceutical formulations, fibre technologies and a wide range of mechanical technologies. She also has extensive experience in preparing and filing design applications for her clients.
Jennifer is passionate about helping businesses protect and leverage their intellectual property to achieve commercial success and has a strong focus on understanding her client’s motives for building and maintaining their IP rights. As well as patent drafting and prosecution, she advises on IP strategy, provides patent infringement and patentability opinions, and assists overseas inventors to establish IP rights in Australia and New Zealand.
Outside of work, Jennifer can be found enjoying the outdoors, skiing when she can, enjoying good food, good books and spending time with her family.
Experience
Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in the intellectual property sector. Her career began as a patent examiner, followed by a role as a patent information scientist at a large multinational pharmaceutical information company. She later qualified as a patent attorney at James & Wells and went on to run her own IP practice for nine years. Jennifer then returned to a role providing IP strategy and training to local businesses and start-ups, while continuing to work in patent and design prosecution.
Following her move back to James & Wells in 2023, Jennifer focuses on design and patent drafting and prosecution across diverse jurisdictions and industries. She provides strategic IP advice, develops filing strategies, and guides clients through complex IP landscapes to ensure their innovations are well protected.
