Tonia advises on all aspects of trade marks and intellectual property, including brand availability searching, portfolio management, prosecution and enforcement, intellectual property strategy, copyright, e-commerce and domain names. Tonia also has a strong commercial practice, including drafting, reviewing and advising on a wide range of commercial and technology agreements.

Tonia spent her formative years growing up in Rarotonga, Cook Islands and is passionate about supporting Pacifica and Māori entrepreneurs in her work. She is an advocate of te reo Māori and tikanga and assists a number of Māori trusts in a pro-bono capacity.

Outside of work, Tonia likes to renovate character homes and garden as well as mentoring young Pacifica and Māori entrepreneurs to grow their business ideas and fulfil their dreams.

Experience

Having worked in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom, Tonia has gained significant experience advising clients on their commercial, licensing, regulatory and intellectual property matters. This includes due diligence in commercial transactions, confidential information and trade secrets.

Tonia has experience working in a number of sectors, but has a particular interest in celebrity name protection, entertainment & media, food & beverage and the indigenous rights of Māori and Pacifica. While working in London she assisted some of the largest US media-technology companies, such as Warner Bros., Google and Apple with their UK and European matters.

Prior to joining James & Wells, Tonia was the lead associate in the intellectual property team at a large commercial firm.
