Tonia advises on all aspects of trade marks and intellectual property, including brand availability searching, portfolio management, prosecution and enforcement, intellectual property strategy, copyright, e-commerce and domain names. Tonia also has a strong commercial practice, including drafting, reviewing and advising on a wide range of commercial and technology agreements. Having lived and worked in New Zealand and internationally, Tonia has gained significant offshore experience advising clients on their commercial, licensing, regulatory and intellectual property matters.

Tonia has experience working in a number of sectors, but has a particular interest in celebrity name protection, entertainment & media, food and beverage and the Indigenous Rights of Maori and Pacific People.

Outside of her work as a Senior Associate, Tonia likes to renovate character homes, garden and invest time in the communities which she works and lives.

Tonia has a strong commercial practice, including due diligence in commercial transactions, confidential information, and trade secrets as well as expertise in doing business in Australia, United Kingdom and Europe

Prior to joining James & Wells, Tonia was the lead associate in the intellectual property team at a large commercial firm.

Qualifications & Memberships

  • Bachelor of Law (First Class Honours) – University of Waikato
  • Admitted as Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court New Zealand (2001)
  • Admitted as Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales (2005)
  • Member of the Intellectual Property Societies of Australia and New Zealand (IPANZ)
