We are delighted to announce the promotion of Taylor Smallwood, a member of our Patents team, to Associate.

Her strong scientific background, combined with her understanding of intellectual property, enables her to provide practical and commercially focused advice across a range of complex technologies.”

Prior to joining James & Wells, Taylor worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The University of Queensland (UQ), where she contributed to leading life sciences research projects. During her time at UQ, she was involved in a collaborative project with international pharmaceutical company Grünenthal to develop novel, non-opioid drug therapies derived from cone snail venom for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. This work provided her with extensive experience in peptide chemistry and structural biology and further strengthened her understanding of the innovation pathway from research to commercialisation.
Taylor holds a PhD in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons). Her doctoral research focused on identifying new classes of immune-suppressing therapeutics from helminth secretions, providing a strong foundation in immunology, drug discovery and therapeutic development. Today, she applies this scientific expertise to support innovators, researchers and businesses in protecting valuable intellectual property across the life sciences sector.
Taylor is a registered Patent Attorney in Australia and New Zealand and a registered Trade Mark Attorney in Australia. She is also an active member of a number of industry organisations, including AusBiotech, Life Sciences Queensland, the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand (IPSANZ) and The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA).
